Competition Obedience

  • Demonstrating the usefulness of a dog as a companion to humankind, AKC Obedience is a sport with rules, regulations, judges, conditioning, training, placements and prizes.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Attention I- II-III
Prerequisites: Dogs should have completed at least a beginner’s class. Dogs should know sit, down, come, and stay.
Description: Each 8 week session is designed to help prepare dogs and handlers for Performance events and for dogs with difficulty tuning out distractions.  The basics of the AKC Novice exercises will be taught along with foundation skills in attention, heeling, stays, recalls, fronts/finishes, exams, and other skills helpful to managing dogs in and out of the ring. The class will be fun and fast paced, and it will be essential for students to practice skills at home during the week. 
Attention III will begin to focus more on the Beginner Novice exercises.
Fees:   Non members--$185   members  $125

Novice/Beginner Novice
Prerequisites: Dogs should have completed the Attention III class or have equivalent skills.
Description: This is a competition obedience class. This class will prepare students to compete in AKC Novice & Beginner Novice obedience trials. The Novice & Beginner Novice exercises will be perfected and proofed. Training gaps you and your dog have will be identified and worked. Run-thrus will be conducted.  Ring strategy will be discussed. Aids will be faded.
Fees:  Non members-$185  members $125

Drop-in Fees:   Non members (and members in poor standing) -- $30   members  $20

Teaching Open
Prerequisites: Dogs should have completed the Novice Class or have equivalent skills
Description: This class teach the skills needed for the Open class obedience exercises. Off leash heeling as well as teaching the dog to take the dumbbell, the retrieve on the flat exercise, retrieve over a jump, broad jump, drop on recall, and the out of sight stays.
Fees:   Non members--$185   members  $125
Drop-in Fees:   Non members (and members in poor standing) -- $30   members  $20


Open (Show Ready)
Prerequisites: Dogs should have completed the Teaching Open class or have equivalent skills.
Description: This class is beneficial to those getting ready to show in Open as well as those currently showing. Class will be geared to keep your dog fully peaked and motivated for on-going showing, as well as identifying and working any training gaps you and your dog have. This class will help perfect the Open exercises as well as focus on polishing and proofing. Rules will be discussed as well as strategy for competing. Run-throughs will be conducted.
Fees:   Non members--$185   members  $125
Drop-in Fees:   Non members (and members in poor standing) -- $30   members  $20


Open for All Levels
Prerequisites: Dogs should know all of the AKC Novice exercises.
Description: This is a competition obedience class. This class is for dogs just learning the open skills or those getting ready to show or currently showing. This class will teach and perfect the Open exercises as well as focus on polishing and proofing. Rules will be discussed as well as strategy for competing. Run-throughs will be conducted.

Utility
Prerequisites: Dogs should have completed the Teaching Utility class or have equivalent skills.
Description: This class is for those needing to perfect the utility exercises, getting ready to show, or currently showing. Class will be geared to keep your dog fully peaked and motivated for on-going showing, as well as identifying and working any training gaps you and your dog have. This class will help perfect the Utility exercises as well as focus on polishing and proofing. Rules will be discussed as well as strategy for competing. Run-throughs will be conducted.
