Our Therapy Dog Class recently had some acting practice! They worked on some handling & interpersonal skills in improvisational scenes. They found it isn't as easy as it looks when interacting as a volunteer therapy team. All students had a chance to act both as therapy team and patient, so they could see the visit from both sides. Many of these scenarios are pulled from real life situations by our very creative director Janet.
Therapy Dog Training
The Human-Animal bond is a very special thing. Training your dog to be certified as a Therapy Dog is a great way to enhance that bond and start to share it with people who can really benefit. Taking your friendly, people-loving dog to schools, libraries, hospitals, rehab facilities, nursing homes, disaster sites, or to people who can't leave their home is such an amazing experience.
There are some skills and behavior pre-requisites for the dogs: NO aggression to other dogs, and Beg 2 or something equivalent, with good leash skills (that means no pulling!) and a good sit and down stay are required.
When all is said and done, it may not be all the awards and ribbons you most cherish about your dog, but the way you and your dog together changed someone's life for the better-Or many people's lives.
Prerequisites: Dog has taken a Beginner 2 Obedience class, Attention 2 Obedience class or have Novice Obedience level skills.
Description: Dogs and handlers will become familiar with medical equipment, obedience and handling skills, policies and procedures needed to successfully pass a Therapy Dog Certification Test and conduct Therapy Dog visits in various types of facilities.
Classes will be announced through our email list. Please contact Janet to put your name on the waiting list.
